1. Data controller
Meruz Technologies (operating as Peacoqs) is the data controller for personal information collected through the Peacoqs mobile and web apps. You can reach our Data Protection Officer at privacy@peacoqs.com.
2. What we collect
We collect the following categories of personal information:
- Account data: name, email, phone number, password (hashed), role, profile photo, bio.
- Verification data: government ID images, utility bills, BVN/NIN where you provide them, and the result of identity checks.
- Listing data: property details, photos, videos, address, location coordinates, pricing.
- Activity data: tours requested, bookings, reviews, favourites, messages, search history.
- Payment data: amount, gateway, transaction reference, status. We do NOT store full card numbers — those are handled by Paystack and Flutterwave.
- Device data: device model, operating system, app version, push-notification token, approximate IP location.
- Location data: precise GPS coordinates only when you grant permission to use the map feature.
3. Why we use it
We process your data for the following purposes and lawful bases:
- To provide the service (contract): authenticating you, showing listings, processing tours, bookings and payments.
- To verify identity (legal obligation, contract): protecting users from fraud and confirming you are who you say you are.
- To communicate (contract, legitimate interest): sending booking, payment, and tour notifications.
- To improve the service (legitimate interest): aggregated analytics, debugging, abuse prevention.
- To send marketing (consent): only if you opt in. You can withdraw consent at any time.
- To comply with the law (legal obligation): tax, anti-money-laundering, court orders.
4. Who we share with
We share personal data only with:
- Other users where it's necessary for the service (a tenant's name and phone go to the landlord they enquire with, and vice versa).
- Payment processors (Paystack, Flutterwave) to process transactions.
- Cloud and infrastructure providers that host our platform (under written data-processing agreements).
- Identity-verification providers when you submit documents.
- Law enforcement or regulators where we are legally required to disclose.
5. International transfers
Some of our service providers operate outside Nigeria. Where we transfer your data outside Nigeria we rely on standard contractual clauses or other safeguards permitted by the NDPA.
6. How long we keep it
We keep your account data while your account is open. Verification documents are retained for up to 24 months after account closure for fraud-prevention. Payment records are retained for at least 7 years to comply with tax law. Reviews remain visible for as long as the listing is active. You can request earlier deletion of data we are not required to keep.
7. Your rights
Under the NDPA you have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you.
- Correct inaccurate data.
- Delete your data, subject to retention rules above.
- Restrict or object to processing in certain cases.
- Withdraw any consent you have given.
- Lodge a complaint with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission.
8. Security
We protect your data with HTTPS in transit, encryption at rest for sensitive fields, role-based access control, and regular security review. No system is perfectly secure — please use a strong unique password and tell us at security@peacoqs.com if you suspect a problem.
9. Children
Peacoqs is not intended for use by anyone under 18. We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has registered, contact privacy@peacoqs.com and we will delete the account.
10. Cookies and tracking
Our web app uses essential cookies for sign-in and a small number of analytics tools (e.g. Google Analytics, Vercel Analytics) to understand how the site is used. The mobile app does not use cookies but uses a device push-notification token, which you can disable in your phone's settings. Details are in our Cookie Notice.
11. Changes
We will update this policy when our practices change. Material changes will be highlighted in-app or notified by email.
